The Program for High School Gifted and Talented Students' Post-College Adaptation and Transfer Counseling

This program is a continuation of the “Post-University Adaptation and Transfer Counseling Program for Gifted Senior High School Students”. This project is designed and planned to enable gifted senior high school students to develop beyond the regular curriculum during their undergraduate years and to facilitate their entry into forward-looking scientific fields (STEM) of study or to connect with emerging forward-looking industries. In accordance with the above objectives, questionnaires were designed to collect action research data in each of the priority projects.

Program Objectives

1. Cultivate innovative learning mechanisms for high school mathematics and science gifted students to become leaders in basic research and industrial technology after entering universities.

2, To establish an inter-university and inter-disciplinary exchange platform for the independent development of the aforementioned students after they enter universities, and to develop basic and advanced courses for talent cultivation.

Program Implementation Overview

2021 Program for Senior High School Gifted and Talented Students' Post-College Adaptation and Transfer Counseling

Project

1. Focus Seminars
The project explores the issues arising from the counseling and transfer mechanism of gifted students in high school and university through two modes (interviews and group discussions) and applies the results of the interviews in the following tasks.

2. Prospective Science Camp (Quantum Computing)
The prospective science camps are planned to develop: community networks, mentorship education model for prospective emerging field projects (quantum computing), and experimental development of learning intensive courses from the previous focused implementation project (focus group).

3. Advisory Committees
The first advisory committee was held in the middle of the implementation period, inviting Professor Fu-Lai Lin, former Vice President of the Ministry of Education and Honorary Professor of the Department of Mathematics, National Taiwan Normal University, Professor Shih-Kuan Lee, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Technology Research Institute and Information Policy Council (ITRI), and Academician Mao-Kun Wu of the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica. In the post-implementation period, Professor Fu-Lai Lin, former Vice President of the Ministry of Education and Honorary Professor of the Department of Mathematics, National Taiwan Normal University, Professor  Shih-Kuang Lee, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Technology Research Institute and Information Policy Council, Professor Jun-Jie Wu, Dean of the College of Science, National Taiwan University, and Professor Kun-Ming Chen, Dean of the College of Science, National Taiwan Normal University, were then invited to conduct a second advisory consultation committee to review the project preliminary results and make recommendations on the future direction of the project.

4. STEM Talks
In order to provide reference for students’ career decisions, a series of four STEM Talks will be held with current students and expert scholars as speakers.

5. Career Exploration USP
In order to develop a learning mechanism and media platform for laboratory internships and to provide an educational model for college students to adapt and transition, the program first collaborated with the National Theory Center to solicit interdisciplinary science research projects with prospective development, and to develop a media platform in a networked mode. This program is expected to accelerate students’ learning in their professional fields and develop interpersonal networks.

6. Prospective Science Alumni Association
The focus of this project is to invite students who have been gifted or special education students to conduct soft interviews and exchanges in order to form a more effective network. In addition to inviting students who have participated in previous activities, students with similar educational backgrounds are also openly recruited to participate.4. STEM Talks

Key Findings

1. Outstanding university students with special academic aptitude need a more flexible transfer mechanism and a flexible course selection mechanism to study basic or advanced courses.

2. College students with exceptional academic aptitude who are undecided need community support to explore their career paths. In particular, cross-disciplinary faculty can potentially help students develop their potential.

3. In the seminars leading to career exploration, it has been found that faculty-student communication can be closer and more harmonious, and that the goal of mutual growth can be achieved through dialogue. Accordingly, the program intends to further plan STEM salon with focused themes and more space for communication activities to guide students’ appropriate development.

4. Although intensive courses and seminars can respond more flexibly to social and academic trends, they require long-term observation to achieve concrete contributions and results.

5. The school’s curriculum is often not designed to respond to emerging disciplines and societal needs (e.g., intensive quantum computing courses in 2021 and mathematical science courses and lectures related to epidemic prevention science and engineering scheduled for 2022), and a more flexible and intensive series of courses could be a timely remedy for this.

6. The experience of conducting academic internships (research programs) will guide students to better understand the academic environment and explore appropriate career paths.

2022Program for Gifted and Talented Senior High School Students' Post-College Adaptation and Transfer Counseling

Project Items

1. Quantum Computing Foundation/Advanced Course
Continuing from the “Prospective Science Camp – Quantum Computing” in 2021, this program aims to cultivate new generation of quantum computing talents. Through three different types of courses (self-study group, group project, and basic training group), the program will help students with special academic aptitude to accelerate their learning of quantum computing and develop related career plans beyond the standard channels.

2. Epidemic Prevention Science and Sustainable Development Summer Camp
This series of lectures takes epidemic, public health and epidemic-related knowledge as the core, and technology industry, mathematical knowledge, big data analysis and social action theories as the weights. This will bring new opportunities for the development of the country in the post-epidemic era.

3. Career Exploration Lecture Series (STEM salon)
The year-long activities are divided into “STEM Salon” and “STEM Summer Camp”.
The lectures are conducted in the form of small-scale salons, in which one expert or industry expert is invited to be the keynote speaker to showcase different professional fields and share experiences in career exploration.
The STEM Summer Camp is a full-day program that will be conducted in collaboration with specific industries and will focus on experiential” activities, supplemented by lectures, to allow students to understand the current state of the academia, the actual needs of the industry, and the practicalities and challenges of working in the field.
